Bend has often been compared to Boulder, Colorado (Pop. 107,000) for its entrepreneurial culture, small town feel with big town amenities, and abundance of recreational opportunities. It’s natural to look to this innovative peer city for cues on how they view and manage multi-modal transportation and report progress.
On Thursday, October 18th, Boulder’s Director of Public Works for Transportation, Mike Gardner-Sweeney will be in Bend to give us a glimpse into his city’s Transportation Master Plan and provide creative solutions to some of Bend’s biggest transportation concerns. Mike will share some Boulder solutions that include:
  • Regular Transportation “Report Card” to the Community (9 key plan objectives)
  • Safety (Vision Zero) and Maintenance as “Core Priorities”
  • Local transportation sales tax since 1967
  • Complete Streets, Low-Stress Multimodal Network, and Walkable Neighborhoods
  • Minimized Congestion/travel time on major streets
  • Expanded “Eco Pass” system for residents, employees, students
  • Expanded transportation options for commuters (in city, regional)
  • “Renewed Vision for Transit” in 2018 city Transportation Master Plan
  • Regional bus rapid transit connections (inter-city)
Since Bend is creating its new Transportation System Plan, members of Bend's Citywide Transportation Advisory Committee will lead this forum. We promise a lively public dialogue on issues both cities share.

PRESENTER: Mike Gardner-Sweeney has been the director of Public Works for Transportation since March 2016. Gardner-Sweeney served as acting director of the Transportation Division from December 2014 to March 2016. He has worked with the Transportation Division for the past 25 years, serving in a variety of roles in operations, planning and management, including principal transportation engineer, transportation operations and planning manager. Before joining the city, he worked at the City of Loveland, CO, as well as at RTD and TransPlan Associates, Inc., in different capacities. Gardner-Sweeney holds a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering from the University of Colorado.
